'If you wish to safeguard a mystery, you must also conceal it from yourself. '
-George Orwell
The scene commences with Laura (
Scarlit Scandal), who is languidly lounging on the sofa, gazing at her laptop on the center table. She’s donned in her yoga attire, but lacks the drive to exercise as she views a yoga video from social media sensation Trudy (Serene Siren).
The initial 6 months of lockdown went without a hitch. Yet, nothing has been straightforward since her spouse Michael was revealed to be ill. Laura's phone vibrates and she diverts her attention to it.
'Could you assist me?' Michael texts. She looks blankly at the message, feeling deflated. In the washroom, Laura gazes at her reflection in the mirror as she discards her workout attire, suiting up in a complete set of protective gear.
Facing the door, she inhales deeply before proceeding to aid her husband. A few beats later, Laura scurries out of Michael's room clutching a tray. She leans on the door, looking disdainfully at the partially-consumed food and utilized cutlery.
She inhales deeply, as if she had been holding her breath. In the kitchen, Laura cleans and dries the dishes and meticulously takes off her protective gear. From outside, the noise of a delivery truck approaching can be heard.
Hearing this, Laura turns off the faucet and faces the door. A smile graces her face. Laura rushes to the front window, just in time to see the no-contact delivery guy (
Jake Adams) approach with her parcels.
Despite his constant mask, she's found herself observing him all through the lockdown. As he approaches, he catches a glimpse of her through the window. Both freeze for a moment and gaze at each other.
He sets her parcels down and raises his hand to greet her. He pulls down his mask to grace her with a smile. The following day, Laura waits by the window in a robe.
She has resolved to be a tad more flirtatious with the delivery man, as she can't stop reminiscing about his smile. It seems like an eternity since someone actually did that. Her phone vibrates.
'Could you fetch me some water?' Michael texts. She tosses the phone down in exasperation. It vibrates again.
She looks out the window and sees the delivery man approaching. He sets the parcels down and hastily turns around, leaving Laura staring in disappointment. She bends down to retrieve her phone and return to reality, when she suddenly hears him returning.
He is holding a flower in his hand and gently places it on the top parcel. Laura is so taken aback by the man's gallant gesture, that she instinctively steps outside. Her robe slips open, revealing her lingerie.
The man hastily retreats and gazes at her in awe. 'You're very beautiful,' he says. 'So are you,' she responds, before realizing that she isn't wearing any protective gear.
She covers her mouth and nose with her hand in panic. 'Do you reside here alone? I've observed that all the parcels are addressed to you,' he inquires. Not knowing how to respond, she nods.
'Once this lockdown concludes, I'd love to take you out sometime,' he continues, cautiously moving forward. '. If that would be agreeable?' Laura nervously fidgets before nodding. He advances further and whispers, 'But, you know, they test essential workers every 24 hours to step outside, right?' She shakes her head, still terrified to remove her hand.
He lowers his mask to reveal a big flirtatious grin. 'So, I know I'm negative. And, if you've been isolating alone this whole time, then technically you should be negative too.
' He uses his gloved hand and gently removes hers from her face. They gaze at each other, unmasked, inhaling the other's air. 'So, perhaps we could go on a date even sooner?' he proposes playfully.
She gazes at him for a moment, a surge of endorphins coursing through her body, before locking lips with him. It's the most exhilarating sensation she's ever experienced. She feels thrilled for the first time in months! 'May I enter?' he inquires.
She swallows nervously, remembering Michael. 'Just wait one minute,' she stutters and abruptly closes the door. Laura's done everything in her power to remain safe, but can anyone ever truly guarantee safety?.
