Second Parents

The story begins with Sarah, an average adolescent girl, cruising through a residential district. She's heading to pick up her best friend, Karen, to enjoy the July 4th festivities at her folks' house. Arriving at Karen's home, she finds Karen ready at the end of her driveway, tote bag at the ready.
Jumping into the passenger seat, the two girls set off. The pair, both 18, have been friends since childhood and with recent high school graduation, this will be their final holiday together before college. It's a long-standing tradition for Karen to spend the holiday with Sarah's family, as they always have more exciting Independence Day plans than her own family.
Sarah's father, in particular, is extravagant when it comes to holiday celebrations, always ensuring his family has plenty of fun activities. This is part of why Karen has always admired Sarah - her life seems perfect. As they chat casually, they return to Sarah's house and park in the driveway.
Sarah's father is on the porch, donning a comical BBQ apron and waving enthusiastically. 'How mortifying,' Sarah chuckles. Karen also laughs, remarking that it's not as bad as last year's apron.
They exit the car and run up the steps, each hugging Sarah's father, before going inside. CUT TO TITLE PLATE Later that day, the family spends time in the backyard. Sarah's father is manning the grill while his wife lounges with the two girls.
They discuss their college plans, and Sarah's mother playfully inquires if Karen has a boyfriend yet. Karen admits that she doesn't, but Sarah's mother continues to pry. Meanwhile, Sarah's father grills in the backdrop.
The camera often cuts to his perspective, showing him observing Karen intently, his gaze moving up and down her body. As the mother's questions continue, Karen starts to feel slightly uneasy. She's more introverted than Sarah, especially when it comes to boys, so she's not used to sharing personal details.
Sarah picks up on this and swiftly changes the subject, to the amusement of the parents. CUT to the dining room table. The family has just concluded dinner: grilled hamburgers.
They reminisce about past 4th of July celebrations together, and Sarah's father raises his glass for a toast. He thanks his stunning wife and daughter for enriching his life with their love daily. He also thanks Karen, whom he views as another daughter, for being such a positive influence and friend for Sarah.
He praises her growth over the years and her transformation into a beautiful young woman. The camera periodically cuts to the father's viewpoint, showing him observing Karen's chest rise and fall with her heavy breaths, making her increasingly uncomfortable. 'If only I were 18 and single again,' he quips.
'You'd have to be on your guard!' The parents chuckle, while Karen tightly grips her napkin under the table, sensing something amiss. Sarah quickly changes the subject and, noticing the time, requests her father to let them prepare for the fireworks. CUT to the outside at twilight.
From the father's viewpoint, he watches the girls as they twirl around with sparklers. Bursts of light illuminate their faces as they react to the sound of fireworks and attempt to draw hearts in the air with their sparklers. After a few minutes of observing them, paying particular attention to their youthful bodies as they play, Sarah's mom enters the frame and whispers to her husband that it's time for the girls to get ready for bed.
Their sparklers have fizzled out. Sarah pleads to stay up a bit longer, but her father insists they turn in early. He has an extensive weekend planned.
She appears somewhat frustrated but complies. CUT to Sarah's bed. She's already tucked in, scrolling on her phone, when Karen exits the bathroom and climbs into bed beside her.
Karen starts discussing social media gossip when Sarah abruptly puts her phone away. 'I'm tired,' she says tersely. 'Let's just go to sleep.
' Karen is slightly taken aback by her coldness. 'Everything alright?' She asks. Sarah confirms and turns her back on her friend.
Karen lies in silence for a moment, confused by the situation. 'Is there any tension between you and your parents?' She asks tentatively. 'The atmosphere seems a bit strained this weekend.
' Sarah scoffs sarcastically and mutters something about her parents favoring Karen over her anyway, so why should she care. Karen attempts to protest, but Sarah tells her to forget it and go to sleep. Reluctantly, Karen turns off the light and closes her eyes.
CUT to the middle of the night. Karen is jolted awake when the room light is switched on. Sarah still lies motionless on her side of the bed, back turned.
As Karen slowly sits up, she.
