The scene commences with a young adult, Sheena (
Aidra Fox), in her chamber. "Billy, I have something I need to say…" she addresses to an unseen listener, her words clearly difficult to articulate. "I'm a lesbian.
" After a pause, she receives no response - the scene widens to reveal she's been rehearsing in front of a mirror. She heaves a sigh of frustration, muttering to herself that her delivery is too abrupt. "Billy," she attempts again in a slightly altered tone, "you know I care about you, right? But.
I can't, well, LOVE you.
Because. I'm in love with women. UGH!" As she continues to practice coming out in various ways before the mirror, none of them seem right to her. Eventually, her frustration peaks and she slams the side of her fist against the wall.
As she curses under her breath and paces the room, she casts a glance at her cell phone, conspicuously placed in the middle of her neatly made bed. It appears to be staring back at her and after several seconds of hesitance, she finally picks up the phone and dials a number with a burst of nervous energy. As the phone rings, Sheena anxiously nibbles her thumb and jiggles her legs.
On the third ring, her boyfriend Billy (Robby Echo) answers. 'Hey darling,' his voice casually greets her. 'Hey hone- hey Billy,' Sheena returns, clearly uncomfortable using their usual affectionate nicknames.
He inquires about what's going on, she begins with a variation of the speech she'd been rehearsing in front of the mirror. She asks him if he knows she loves him, right? He replies affirmatively, reciprocating her feelings. She then informs him that she has something to disclose.
She continues, explaining that she's discovered some things about herself, significant things. she cuts herself off mid-sentence, asking for a do-over. She assures him he's very important to her and she has news to share. He responds with concern, noting her serious tone - is it something bad? Caught off guard by the question, she stammers that it's not bad, just.
different.
Billy laughs nervously, 'Babe, you're not making much sense. ' The conversation falls silent on both ends, as Billy waits for a response and Sheena takes a desperate deep breath, frustrated with herself. After a moment, Billy checks if she's still there.
'Yeah, I'm still here, sorry. ' Sheena apologizes. She suggests perhaps they should meet - this might be a topic better discussed in person. Billy agrees, inviting her over to his place - his parents are away for the weekend so they'll have the house to themselves.
That's good, Sheena replies relieved, it's probably better that they're alone actually. They finalize plans for her visit, and then say their goodbyes. 'Love you, darling,' Billy expresses over the phone.
Sheena pauses, almost ending the call, but stops herself and brings her phone back to her ear. 'You too,' she responds softly. She hangs up, tossing her phone aside on the bed in dismay.
She grabs a pillow from the head of her bed and clings to it for comfort, suppressing the urge to weep. TITLE PLATE
