Alina Lopez, known as April, a teenage babysitter, ascends the stairs of a suburban house. For her, this is just another routine day, another job, and a bit more cash in her pocket, which she badly needs. However, the dwelling's size suggests that its occupant is affluent.
She raps on the door, and a friendly man (
Dick Chibbles), greets her. 'Mr. Perry?' April enquires with a grin.
'That's me. You must be April, welcome!' Trent responds. April is delighted to meet him and expresses her excitement to meet his children.
April and Trent move into the living room, engaging in light conversation. It becomes apparent that April is responsible for her younger brother, having lost her parents. Trent expresses his sympathy, though the conversation shifts to more personal topics.
He asks about her ethnicity, if she's an athlete, and about her school life. April courteously responds to all the inquiries, regardless of her discomfort. When school comes up, she confesses her aspiration to study fashion design, but financially it's a bit of a stretch since she didn't receive a scholarship.
Trent seems intrigued and reassures her that working hard for your dreams is honorable. April then asks about the whereabouts of the boys, to which Trent reveals they're in the playroom. He'll be away for a few hours, so he hopes she won't have any problems with them.
When April asks about his wife, Trent becomes evasive. He vaguely mentions that his wife is at work and won't be home. He then asks if April is ready to meet his youngest son.
April smiles, affirming she is and proceeds down the hallway as directed. As she does, Trent follows her with a desirous look. 'Quite the maternal figure.
' he mutters.
TITLE PLATE
CUT TO hours later, April is in the living room tidying up after putting the family to bed. She collects a few toys and moves to a table where there are crayons and a drawing. Picking up the drawing, she wonders aloud what they drew, her brows furrowing with confusion as she scrutinizes it.
The drawing depicts stick figures. There's a man labeled 'Dad' and a woman labeled 'Claire. ' They are surrounded by three boys.
All appear happy. There's another woman labeled 'Mom. ' She too is smiling, but a dark crayon has obscured her.
The picture emanates a troubling aura. Puzzled, she whips out her phone and does some online research. She searches Trent Perry's name and stumbles upon his wife's obituary.
Suddenly, she hears movement and spins around. Trent is looming in the doorway, looking menacing. Startled, April demands to know what's happening.
She shows him the obituary on her phone and asks why he lied about his wife. Trent looks distraught, but attempts to shake it off. 'Listen, I can explain.
' he pleads.
April tries to leave, but Trent blurts out, 'Have you ever had someone just DIE on you?' April hesitates, painfully recalling her parents' deaths, and decides to hear him out. He begins to recount a heartbreaking story about how he and his wife struggled to conceive for years. They were finally successful, but the doctor advised against carrying the pregnancy to term.
His wife ignored the advice and died giving him their firstborn son. He loves his son, but they had always wanted a daughter. April, though cautious, is touched by his plight and apologizes for his loss.
She was confused by the drawing. But who is Claire? Trent explains that Claire was a wet nurse for his son during his first year, and like April, she had strong maternal instincts. In their desperation to rebuild their family, they agreed that Claire would try to give him a daughter, but she gave him two more sons instead. And now? Claire is gone.
When April inquires about Claire's whereabouts, Trent deflects the question.
Instead, he expresses his hope that April could be the one to give him a daughter. April is taken aback, flatly rejecting him, but Trent quickly assures her that he's not asking for love! He only wants her to carry his child. After all, April needs money for college, right? He can provide for that! And her younger brother? Trent can guarantee he gets into the best private school.
Money isn't a problem for him; he just needs a surrogate. It's only 9 months of April's life. Plus, she'd be fulfilling his wife's final wish.
April needs a moment to consider the proposition.
It's a massive request, but she needs the money. She has to support her brother and she has big dreams for herself. Finally, she asks Trent how much he can offer her, indicating she's open to the proposal.
Trent breathes a.
