The scene begins with Bryce (
Derrick Pierce), Kim (
Dee Williams), Darryl (Brock Slayden), and Rhonda (Venice Rose), all gathered in anticipation within a lounge setting. Bryce and Kim are filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Kim exclaims in disbelief that this moment is finally occurring after so many years! Bryce, with affection, kisses his wife's forehead, expressing his equal astonishment -- their beloved daughter is returning to their lives! They have a renewed opportunity to be a family again -- a prospect that seems almost too wonderful to believe.
'Indeed, it seems TOO wonderful to be true,' Bryce's sibling, Darryl, interjects. His facial expression is dubious. His spouse, Rhonda, also appears concerned as she stands nearby.
'SOMEONE needs to inject a dose of reality here, and it might as well be your brother. Your daughter disappeared 12 years ago. No one found ANYTHING! Not the local law enforcement, not the FBI -- NOBODY.
And now, Scarlett reappears from thin air?' Darryl argues. Just then, the doorbell chimes, and an eager Bryce and Kim answer it. A teenager, Scarlett (
Jane Wilde), stands on their doorstep alongside a police officer, declaring herself to be the daughter they have long sought.
Upon their reunion, Scarlett avoids discussing her past, a point that doesn't raise any suspicions from her parents. Darryl and Rhonda, however, grow more skeptical of Scarlett, who seems to recognize their threat to her scheme. Kim offers to show Scarlett to her room.
'That'd be perfect. Mom,' she responds. However, as they depart, Scarlett casts one more wary glance back at Darryl and Rhonda. Once Kim and Scarlett exit the room, Bryce's anger towards Darryl intensifies when Darryl attempts to caution him once more.
Frustrated at his failure to convince his brother, Darryl and Rhonda vacate the premises. A week later, Bryce returns from work and eavesdrops on Scarlett having a dubious conversation, suggesting she may not be who she claims. Scarlett hears him listening outside her room, and inquires if anyone is there? Bryce reveals himself by opening the door and maintaining an air of normalcy.
She fabricates a story of having been asleep. Bryce, aware of her dishonesty, appears somewhat taken aback as he attempts to regain composure. He instructs her to freshen up because once Mom arrives home, they will be going out for dinner.
Scarlett begins to reinforce her deception, using sensuality as a means to gauge what Bryce knows. However, their confrontation is cut short by Kim's arrival home. 'Ahh, that's your mother.
I'll leave you to prepare for dinner,' he states as he exits the bedroom. As he departs, Scarlett's expression shifts to one of concern and darkness. Downstairs, Bryce discloses his suspicions about Scarlett to Kim, who now appears increasingly anxious.
She questions whether he believes Darryl and Rhonda might be correct? 'Correct about what?' Scarlett interjects, appearing suddenly behind them. She continues to feign innocence, but there's an ominous undertone as she approaches them. 'You ARE our beloved Scarlett, aren't you?' Kim questions, her voice shaking as she clings tighter to Bryce.
She embraces herself, pretending to be emotional, and recounts a tale of being abducted by a man and woman when she was six years old at a playground. They stated they were friends of Bryce and Kim and had come to take her home. But they never did.
She suppressed the memory for many years until her teenage years when she began to question her origins. Upon her 18th birthday, she discovered an old news article about a missing child in the local library. Recognizing her own picture, she knew it was HER.
This is how she obtained Bryce and Kim's names and, well, after all this time, here she is. Bryce inquires about what Scarlett was wearing the day she disappeared. Scarlett accurately describes the attire mentioned in articles about the missing child. But when Kim mentions a necklace, Scarlett stumbles.
Left with no other choice, Scarlett finally confesses that she isn't their biological daughter. Kim stifles a sob and Bryce angrily orders Scarlett to leave their home immediately before they call the police! Scarlett remains unphased and fearless, asking if the past week wasn't the best week of their lives. 'That was when we believed you were our kin! Our blood!' Kim exclaims.
Scarlett proceeds to manipulate them, attempting to convince them to accept her as their daughter so they can live out their fantasy of a complete family. She's more than willing to maintain this charade and build a life with them, provided there are some. additional benefits. to the arrangement. As she suggests.
