Joanne (
Lauren Phillips) and her spouse, Nick (
Dick Chibbles), are just nestling in for the evening when a knock at the door interrupts them. Upon opening the door, Lauren is met with her goddaughter, Avery (
Paisley Porter), who throws herself into Lauren's arms, weeping inconsolably. Taken aback, Lauren looks to the accompanying police officer for clarification.
Moments later, their world is shattered when they are informed that Avery's parents, their closest friends, have perished in a devastating car crash. Despite not being biologically related, as Avery's godparents, Joanne and Nick commit to doing everything in their power to support her. As time goes on, however, Nick finds himself increasingly agitated by Avery's presence in their home.
Avery appears to be intruding into every facet of their lives with no regard for their personal space. What's more alarming is that she doesn't seem to be mourning her parents' loss, which deeply unnerves Nick. He attempts to voice his concerns to Joanne, convinced that something is off with Avery, but Joanne maintains that this is Avery's way of dealing with her trauma and they must support her, regardless.
Although Nick begrudgingly accepts this, he confesses that much of his frustration stems from their lack of private time together. Now that Avery has momentarily left the house, perhaps they can seize this opportunity to focus on each other. But as their intimacy intensifies, are they truly alone?.
