The Gold Star

The scene opens with two young women, Gia and Alex, sitting intimately close on Alex's couch, wrapped under a cozy blanket. For almost two years, they have been secretly involved in a relationship, a love not accepted by their conservative small town. Gia is betrothed to the town's deputy mayor, Gabriel Dwight, a well-known figure in the community and Gia's high school sweetheart.

The scene captures Alex scrolling through property listings, trying to fend off Gia's playful footsies.
She finally closes her laptop, a smile subtly spreading across her face. 'Have any firms responded to your applications?' she inquires. Gia shakes her head, mentioning it's only been a few days.
'But you did duplicate the forms, right?' Alex asks. Gia sits upright and embraces her partner. 'Yes darling,' she replies.
'I completed everything you asked. I filled out the forms, dispatched them and the duplicates to the court clerk in New York. We just need to arrange a hearing once we reach there and then they will authorize the name change.
' Alex seems relieved. She has been plotting their escape for a while now, especially after discovering Gia's pregnancy. Alex was aware that it wasn't her girlfriend's fault.
Gabriel was domineering and manipulative. But now they have the perfect chance to escape and start a family in a more accepting place. 'I can't wait to marry you the moment we reach Virginia!' she exclaims proudly.
Gia playfully teases her for being such a goldstar before climbing onto her lap and pulling out some paint swatches. They begin discussing options for their future baby's room when Gia receives a call from Gabriel, commanding her to return home immediately. The joy drains from her face as she obediently agrees.
Alex looks furious. She loathes him intensely, but she knows it'll only be a few more weeks before everything is prepared for them to flee. She reassures her girlfriend to stay strong and behave as if everything is normal.
He can't suspect anything. They share a passionate kiss and Gia hurriedly leaves Alex's apartment. CUT TO TITLE PLATE Several days pass.

She knows something is not right. Gia always responds. Something must have happened.
Panicked, Alex tries to contemplate her options. She doesn't want to alarm Gia's family and she refuses to call Gabriel, as they've never seen eye to eye, so she decides to drive past their house to investigate. She grabs her car keys and rushes out of the apartment.

'I was. just passing by. and was wondering if Gia and the baby needed anything. ' She stammers. Gabriel interrupts her. 'I must admit: I was impressed by your meticulous planning.
Had it not been so carefully planned, I might have believed Gia came up with it herself. But, we all know you're the more intelligent one. ' Alex stares at him, petrified.
Her stomach sinks. 'Whatever you've been doing to Gia is going to stop,' he declares sternly, his voice almost a growl. 'I'm running for election this year and if you think a little lesbian is going to prevent me from achieving my American dream, you're mistaken!' He tosses the phone on the ground, crushing it under his boot, as he grabs Alex by her collar and pulls her close to his face.
'Now get the hell off my property!' He storms back into his garage, slamming the door in Alex's face. She remains frozen, seething, before picking up the phone from the ground and fleeing. CUT to that night, Alex tosses and turns in her bed.
